Smilowitz is the Junior William A. Patterson Chair in Transportation in the Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences department at Northwestern University. She has an interest in humanitarian logistics and is a recognized expert in the design and operations of logistics networks, traffic flow theory, and infrastructure management. Smilowitz helps guide the design teams and recruit students from the IEMS department to the program. Smilowitz also helps with curriculum development as it relates to industrial engineering.
